What to expect at your first pelvic health appointment

Your first appointment is a 45-minute consultation in a private room. We’ll take a detailed history covering medical, obstetric, urinary and bowel function, then discuss assessment options. An internal (vaginal or rectal) examination is the gold-standard pelvic floor assessment, but it is always optional — many useful insights can be gathered from external palpation, real-time ultrasound and behavioural assessment alone. You stay fully in control of what you’re comfortable with.

If we proceed with internal assessment, the physiotherapist will explain every step and you can stop at any moment. You’ll leave with a tailored home program, clear next-visit goals, and (where relevant) referral letters to your GP, gynaecologist, urologist or continence nurse.

Funding options

  • Private health insurance — HICAPS at reception for instant claiming with Bupa, Medibank, HCF, NIB and every major fund
  • Medicare — Enhanced Primary Care plans (EPC) with up to 5 rebated sessions per calendar year, on GP referral
  • NDIS — we are a registered NDIS provider for self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants
  • DVA — Gold and White cards accepted for eligible pelvic floor conditions
  • WorkCover & CTP — for pelvic floor dysfunction arising from workplace injury or motor vehicle accident

Frequently asked questions — pelvic health physiotherapy

Do I need a referral for pelvic floor physiotherapy?
No, not for private appointments. A GP referral is only required for Medicare EPC plans, WorkCover, CTP or DVA claims.

Is an internal (vaginal or rectal) examination required?
No, it’s always optional. Internal examination is the gold-standard pelvic floor assessment but useful insights can be gathered from external palpation, real-time ultrasound and behavioural assessment alone. You stay in control throughout.

How many sessions will I need?
Most patients see meaningful change within 3–6 sessions. Complex prolapse, chronic pain or post-prostatectomy cases often need ongoing review over 3–6 months.

Do you treat post-partum patients?
Yes — we recommend a 6-week post-birth check (vaginal birth) or 8–10 week check (Caesarean) to assess pelvic floor function, abdominal separation and readiness to return to exercise.

Do you offer pelvic floor physio for men?
Yes — Clinic Director Joshua Hopton holds a special interest in men’s pelvic health, including post-prostatectomy rehab, chronic pelvic pain and urinary urgency.

Is pelvic floor physio covered by NDIS?
Yes, where it’s included in your plan. We’re a registered NDIS provider for self-managed, plan-managed and NDIA-managed participants.

Can I bring a support person?
Yes — a partner, friend or family member is welcome to accompany you.
