ACUPUNCTURE & DRY NEEDLING

Acupuncture & dry needling — part of your treatment, not separate.

We use Western medical acupuncture and dry needling as part of an integrated physiotherapy treatment plan — never as a stand-alone service. Single-use sterile needles, evidence-based application, and always combined with manual therapy and exercise prescription.

INSIDE A PHYSIO SESSION

Claimable under physiotherapy on private health.

Needling is included inside a standard 30- or 45-minute physiotherapy consultation — it’s not booked separately. That means it’s claimable under the physiotherapy item code on your extras cover, your DVA referral, your NDIS plan or your Medicare CDM allocation.

HOW IT WORKS

Western medical acupuncture vs. dry needling.

Western medical acupuncture targets evidence-based acupoints for broader physiological effects. Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points to elicit a local twitch and relieve referred pain. Same needles, different model. Most patients describe a brief dull ache during insertion followed by a sense of release.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Needling patients ask us …

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?+

The needles are the same; the model is different. Dry needling targets myofascial trigger points; Western acupuncture targets evidence-based acupoints for broader physiological effects. Both are useful in different contexts.

Does it hurt?+

Most patients feel a brief dull ache during insertion. A local muscle twitch is common and means the needle is in the right spot. Some mild soreness for 24 hours afterwards is normal.

Are the needles single-use?+

Yes — all needles are sterile, single-use and disposed of after every patient.

Can I claim acupuncture on private health?+

Yes — when delivered by a physiotherapist as part of a physio consultation, it’s rebatable under your physiotherapy extras cover.

Are there any conditions where needling is not recommended?+

Yes — some bleeding disorders, certain anti-coagulant medications, infection at the needle site or specific cardiac/pacemaker considerations. Your physiotherapist will screen for these before treatment.
